The second and third parts aired from June 22 to September 22, 2019. The series was renewed for a second season in February 2020, but the production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this article, we will review the first episode of Arthdal Chronicles, which introduces us to the main characters and sets up the conflict between the human Sarams and the blue-blooded Neanthals.

Summary

The episode begins with a narration that explains the origin of Arth, a land created by Aramun Haesulla, a god who descended from the sky. Aramun Haesulla also created two species: humans (Sarams) who inherited his intelligence and creativity, and Neanthals who inherited his strength and agility. However, Aramun Haesulla disappeared after creating Arth, leaving behind a prophecy that one day he will return as a child of mixed blood.

We then see a group of Neanthals hunting a mammoth in a forest. They are led by Ragaz (Teo Yoo), who has blue eyes and can dream. He is married to Asa Hon (Choo Ja-hyun), a human woman who can also dream. They have a son named Eunseom (Song Joong-ki), who is half-human and half-Neanthal.

Meanwhile, in Arthdal, a city built by humans, we meet Ta-gon (Jang Dong-gun), a charismatic and ambitious warrior who leads the Daekan forces. He is the son of Sanung (Kim Eui-sung), the leader of the Saenyeok tribe and the most powerful man in Arthdal. Ta-gon has a secret: he is an Igutu, a rare hybrid of human and Neanthal blood. He hides his identity by wearing makeup and killing anyone who discovers his true nature.

Ta-gon's father plans to expand his territory by conquering the lands of the Neanthals. He sends Ta-gon and his men to negotiate an alliance with them, but Ta-gon has other intentions. He secretly orders his men to infect the Neanthals with smallpox blankets and burn their camps. He then leads a massacre against them, killing most of them except for Ragaz and his family.

Ragaz fights back against Ta-gon's men, but is eventually captured and tortured. He reveals that he has a son who is Aramun Haesulla's reincarnation. Ta-gon decides to spare him and take him back to Arthdal as a trophy.

Asa Hon manages to escape with Eunseom, but they are pursued by Ta-gon's men. She reaches a salt lake where she meets another group of humans called Wahans. They are led by Yeol Son (Jung Suk-yong), who welcomes them as guests. Asa Hon asks them to take care of Eunseom before she dies from her wounds.

Ten years later, Eunseom has grown up among the Wahans as one of them. He is curious about his origins and dreams of seeing Arthdal someday. He is also close with Tan-ya (Kim Ji-won), a girl who is destined to become the next great mother of the Wahans. He also has a horse named Kanmoreu, who is loyal to him.

One day, Eunseom and Tan-ya witness a strange sight: a hot air balloon flying over the sky. They follow it and discover that it belongs to Taealha (Kim Ok-vin), a beautiful and cunning woman who is Ta-gon's lover and the daughter of the leader of the Hae tribe, a rival of the Saenyeok tribe. Taealha is also an Igutu, but she hides it by wearing a mask. She is interested in Aramun Haesulla's prophecy and wants to find his reincarnation.

Taealha lands near the salt lake and meets Eunseom and Tan-ya. She is intrigued by Eunseom's appearance and asks him to come with her to Arthdal. Eunseom refuses, but Taealha gives him a bracelet as a gift. She then leaves with her men, but not before setting fire to the Wahan's village.

The Wahans are devastated by the attack and blame Eunseom for bringing trouble. They decide to exile him from the tribe. Eunseom accepts his fate and bids farewell to Tan-ya and Kanmoreu. He then sets off on his journey to Arthdal, hoping to find his father and his true identity.

Review

The first episode of Arthdal Chronicles is an impressive introduction to the series, as it establishes the main characters, the setting, and the conflict in a captivating way. The episode is rich in details and visuals, creating a believable and immersive world that mixes history, fantasy, and mythology.

The episode also showcases the talents of the cast, especially Jang Dong-gun and Song Joong-ki, who play complex and charismatic characters that are both heroes and villains. Jang Dong-gun portrays Ta-gon as a ruthless and ambitious leader who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals, but also as a lonely and conflicted man who struggles with his identity and his feelings for Taealha. Song Joong-ki plays Eunseom as a naive and innocent boy who is curious about the world, but also as a brave and loyal warrior who will fight for his people and his destiny.

The episode also explores some interesting themes, such as the clash of civilizations, the nature of power, the role of prophecy, and the meaning of identity. The episode raises questions about who is the true enemy, who is the true savior, and what is the true history of Arth.

However, the episode is not without flaws. The episode is quite long, running for over an hour and a half, which may test some viewers' patience. The episode also relies heavily on narration and exposition, which may make some scenes feel slow or redundant. The episode also introduces many characters and terms, which may confuse some viewers who are not familiar with Korean culture or history.

Conclusion

The first episode of Arthdal Chronicles is a promising start for the series, as it delivers an epic and engaging story that combines history, fantasy, and mythology. The episode introduces us to the main characters and their motivations, as well as the setting and the conflict that will shape their destinies. The episode also impresses with its production value, its acting, and its themes.
